North Carolina Active Shooter School Was A "Faulty Water Heater"

Ferguson said there was a report of an active shooter at Topsail High School on Friday morning after noises were heard coming from the top of the building.

WRAL reports there was a heavy law enforcement presence at the school, which is located at 245 N. Saint Johns Church Road in Hampstead, when the reports of an active shooter first surfaced.

The sound of gunshots which prompted reports of an active shooter at a North Carolina high school may have been caused by a malfunctioning water heater.

Investigators have found no evidence of shots fired at Topsail High School, according to Pender County Sheriff's Office. Staff members of those schools were asked to report to the same place.

WECT News 6 reports that Topsail High School, Topsail Middle School, and Topsail Elementary School are in lockdown.

It prompted evacuations and lockdowns at Topsail High School in the unincorporated town of Hampstead.

As of 7 a.m., Capt. James Rowell with the Pender County Sheriff's Office said that no injuries had been reported but it was still an active scene.

Parents and students are gathering in the parking lot of a Lowes Foods. A 16-year-old boy who authorities say armed himself with a semi-automatic rifle after hearing about that potential attack also was arrested.
