She was once convicted of a graft case in 1993, but the Supreme Court later cleared her of any wrongdoing.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) will "gladly abide" once the court orders the arrest of former first lady and Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos, its chief said Friday. She was acquitted on a further three counts of graft.

As well as being first lady, she was the minister of human settlements from 1976 to 1986 and governor of Manila from 1978 to 1984.

Marcos, a member of the Philippines House of Representatives, will be given 30 days to explain her absence, according to Lenina Alisuag, from office of the clerk of courts of the Sandiganbayan Court Fifth Division, which has jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases involving graft and corrupt practices.

Marcos said in a statement her lawyer is "studying the decision and he has advised us that he intends to file a motion for reconsideration".

The Sandigan also ordered the release of an arrest warrant of arrest against Marcos who did not attend the promulgation of the cases against her.

The special anti-graft Sandiganbayan court sentenced Marcos, 89, to serve 6 to 11 years in prison for each of the seven counts of violating an anti-corruption law when she illegally funneled about $200 million to Swiss foundations in the 1970s as Metropolitan Manila governor.

Marcos, who is now a member of the House of Representatives, is running for a governor post in next year's general election.

He was accused of amassing more than US$10 billion while in office and died in exile in 1989. He indicated the family still denied that the assets had been stolen as alleged by political opponents.
