Bourke Street stabbing: One dead, man arrested in Melbourne

One person has been killed on a central Melbourne street where a knife wielding man was left in a critical condition after being shot by police.

"A man was arrested at the scene and has been taken to hospital under police guard in a critical condition", the statement said.

Videos and photos shared on Twitter showed a burning auto and police officers in an altercation with the man clad in black.

Police shot the man in the chest after he charged at them with the knife.

No other suspects are being sought.

"The investigation is ongoing and we are keeping an open mind", he says.

Three people were stabbed in the incident and police confirmed one of the victims died at the scene, while another two were rushed to hospital.

The man allegedly set his vehicle on fire and stabbed a number of people this afternoon before being shot.

The Friday incident took place blocks away from Flinders Street Railway Station, where a driver plowed into pedestrians previous year, injuring 18.

He has been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Police warned people to avoid the area and dispatched the bomb squad to secure the area and examine the burning auto.

"The cops were trying to hit him with batons and he wasn't going down", he said.

Police are not looking for anyone further at this early stage.

The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage.

"Three victims have been located, two appear to have been stabbed to the upper body, the third has died at the scene", Victoria Police said in a statement.

'Police response was swift and overwhelming.

"I've never seen a fire that big before".

Police are asking members of the public to avoid the area.

Her immediate thought was, "Oh no, not another Bourke Street incident", she said.

"And then I heard one loud bang".

James Gargasoulas is accused of deliberately driving his vehicle into pedestrians on Bourke Street, hitting 33 people.
