The demonstrations come after President Trump replaced Rod Rosenstein with acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker to oversee the probe.

A personal connection to a Mueller witness is unlikely to sway Whitaker or the White House when it comes to recusal, as Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein supervised the probe despite being a witness himself.

A group of demonstrators in Jacksonville lined the side of San Jose Boulevard on Thursday evening, demanding that special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation be protected. He was a vocal critic of Mr Mueller, arguing in an op-ed for CNN previous year that the probe should not go into the finances of Mr Trump and his family members.

Democratic Representative Jerrold Nadler, who is in line to become chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in January, said it is "wholly inappropriate" for Whitaker to take over the Mueller probe and that Rosenstein should continue overseeing it. For more than a year-and-a-half, Sessions was subjected to criticisms and personal attacks from the president after he recused himself from the investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation.

"Trump's actions are being compared with those of U.S. President Richard Nixon in one of the most controversial episodes of the Watergate scandal, the Saturday Night Massacre", said organizers.

In an effort to raise Hell about the forced resignation of Jeff Sessions and what it might mean for the Mueller investigation, Boston is joining nationwide protests Thursday with a 5 p.m. rally on Boston Common.

Whitaker, a former USA attorney from Iowa who twice ran unsuccessfully for statewide office and founded a law firm with other Republican Party activists, once opined about a scenario in which Trump could fire Sessions and then appoint an acting attorney general who could stifle the funding of Mueller's probe.

Mr Sessions was technically Mr Mueller's boss, but recused himself from the probe to avoid any conflict of interest because he had been an adviser on Mr Trump's election campaign, a decision which led to him falling out of the President's good graces.

Installing Whitaker could clear the way for Trump to force out Mueller.

Even after he arrived at the Justice Department, Whitaker harbored frustration about the length of the special counsel probe and doubts about the scope of Mueller's authority, a person familiar with the matter said.

The broadsides escalated in recent months, with Trump telling an interviewer that Sessions "never had control" of the Justice Department.

Sessions, 71, has a long political history in Alabama. He did not respond when asked why he was there.
