2018 midterm elections: Trump tweet calls night 'Tremendous success'

President Donald Trump's Republicans are projected to retain control of the US Senate in the mid-term elections.

Trump on Monday admitted the GOP could lose control of the House.

"Dealing a major setback to President Trump's legislative agenda".

President Trump called Pelosi Tuesday night to offer congratulations, her office said. Moscow denies meddling and Trump denies any collusion.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nancy Pelosi is telling Democratic lawmakers and supporters that elections are about the future and "thank you all for making the future better for all of America's children".

He said: "Congrats to my brother Greg Pence on being elected to serve in the US Congress".

Voting in Chicago, James Gerlock, 27, a Republican, said he wanted to see more of the soaring economic growth that Trump says is the fruit of his business-friendly policies.

But when it came to candidates for state Senate, Democratic primary voters threw their weight behind progressive candidates, including 27-year-old democratic socialist Julia Salazar - who actively campaigned on issues like sex workers' rights and racial injustice - and Alessandra Biaggi, another millennial and first-time candidate.

Mr Trump had no public events scheduled for yesterday and spent part of the morning on Twitter promoting GOP candidates and criticising Democrats.

Republicans' failed efforts to repeal Obamacare became the centerpiece of House Democrats' campaigns across the country, with candidates unrelentingly highlighting GOP incumbents' votes to weaken protections for preexisting conditions to the point that many of those Republicans felt the need to go up with ads of their own claiming that wasn't true.

At stake are all 435 seats in the US House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate.

Democrats seized early victories in contested House races in Florida and in Virginia, but lost a high-profile contest in Kentucky. Joe Donnelly, after the Democratic incumbent's projected loss to GOP challenger Mike Braun.

It comes as the Republicans have held on to the Senate after key victories in Indiana, Texas and North Dakota.

Some of the campaign's biggest Democratic stars lost.

Democrats also captured governorships in Michigan, Illinois and Kansas.

Almost 40 percent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to AP VoteCast, a national survey of the electorate, while about 25 percent said they voted to express support for Trump.

She said House Democrats would be a check on Mr Trump, and added: "The American people want peace, they want results".

Democrats also had success in House Districts 23, 24, 28 and 29.

Democrats turned out to register disapproval of Trump's divisive rhetoric and policies on such issues as immigration and his travel ban targeting several Muslim-majority countries.

Yet Trump's party will maintain Senate control for the next two years, at least.

His highest approval of these states is West Virginia, oddly enough, where slightly more than three-in-five approve of the job he's doing as President, but Democrat Joe Manchin was able to keep his seat. The Republican side of the aisle elected mostly white men.

Investors often favour Washington gridlock because it preserves the status quo and reduces uncertainty, even though many investors this time around had been hoping for a continuation of the Republican agenda.
