Democrats picked up governorships in Kansas and at least three other USA states on Tuesday but failed to win high-profile races in Florida and OH, as voters cast ballots in three dozen gubernatorial contests across the country.

Republicans Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis, running for U.S. Senate and Florida Governor, won the same 54 counties in Tuesday's election. Gillum delivered a concession speech shortly before 11 p.m. As he left the polling place, a crowd gathered outside chanting, "Bring it home!"

"I just hadn't made note of the candidates that I was going to choose for the Senate and House and I had made note of all of the other candidates I was going to vote for", she said. "I always vote, but ever since Trump was elected, it's felt especially important to participate".

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump rallied support for DeSantis this past week in Fort Myers and Pensacola, telling voters they had a choice "between greatness and gridlock".

'I'm not calling Mr. DeSantis a racist. "At least in this election". Governing is about getting things done on behalf of the people of Florida, keeping our economy going, improving our water quality and environment, promoting public safety and expanding educational opportunities. "And by voting for something, we're returning the politics of decency and what's right and what's common between all of us".

DeSantis, who was a little-known congressman from the Jacksonville suburbs a year ago, squeaked past Democrat Andrew Gillum in what quickly became a nasty contest with racial overtones and accusations of corruption.

But Democrats should stop short of blaming their candidate in coming up short. Republicans have cast 2.08 million. Florida is one of the most closely watched swing states in the nation, and voters here helped turn the tide for George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. His plan was to excite younger voters, minorities and the wing of the party that calls themselves progressives - groups that usually turnout in lower numbers in non-presidential election years.

The Senate race is too close to call and is likely heading to a recount. He cited health care, the ability to tell the truth and human decency. Phillis and Jeffrey voted for Andrew Gillum.

Republicans said they cared most about immigration, then health care, then foreign policy. He's already seen his insurance premiums sky-rocket and says he doesn't "want to be in a high-risk pool".

Democrats did much better in heavily Democratic counties than they did four years ago when Scott beat former Gov. Charlie Crist, said University of North Florida political science professor Matthew Corrigan, who was part of The Associated Press team analyzing returns Tuesday night.
