The Italian outfit were beaten 2-0 at the Camp Nou by a Barca side missing Messi through injury, with Rafinha and Jordi Alba the scorers in a comfortable win for the Blaugrana.

"We can play against anyone and perform the same way", he told reporters at a pre-match press conference.

Four wins out of four, including a stroll past Inter Milan and a hammering of Real Madrid so severe it cost their coach his job, mean Messi reunites with a team enjoying its strongest run of the season, ironically without its star striker.

"There are three or four options, but we will not take risks [with Messi]". More than anything because he is one more [player] and so we have more to choose from. Of course it's necessary to get him back as soon as possible - it's always better if he's there.

The Catalan giants can clinch top spot in Group B by beating Inter at San Siro on Tuesday, but Valverde is expecting Luciano Spalletti's side to pose a tougher challenge than they did in their first meeting.

Barca lead the group with nine points from three games followed by Inter on six while PSV Eindhoven and Tottenham have one point each. I never made the first step to say I want this player. When we talk about Barcelona, we are talking about the highest calibre of opponent in this game.

"But, in the end, we won by playing doing something different".

"We need to control the game to try to reach the goal". But you also have to be forceful.

Just as it seemed they would inflict a second defeat of the season on the champions, though, Ousmane Dembele equalised with a terrific half-volley in the 87th, before Suarez turned in his second to snatch three points for Valverde and co.
