Police to monitor sex offenders on Halloween

That's why his deputies hand-delivered the warning flyers to registered sex offenders in the county.

Without it, he expects more children trick-or-treating on the streets on Wednesday night.

Sheriff Gary Long told CBS News he is not out to humiliate offenders. Local law enforcement will also be out in large numbers, making sure everyone's safe.

TBI has created a web page where people can type in their home address and find out where sex offenders live around them. And though some on the registry have sexually abused children, they're probably not going to target random kids on Halloween.

It is illegal in most states for sex offender's to participate in Halloween, with many facing fines or worse if they partake in the holiday. They are sex offenders still on probation and with a child safety zone condition.

"I think it's scary to take your kids out on Halloween because you never know who's around", said Jessica Bent of Barre City. The offenders will be placed in the Council Chambers on Halloween night from 6pm-9pm, Mayor Gary Jones said on Facebook last week. Parents can also find the map to registered sex offenders in their area by following the link. No decorations can be displayed at the home that would attract trick-or-treaters.

"There are some sex offenders that are not happy", Long said. "That's a mistake, because a candy bar can be the very first step in a process for a sexual predator to start grooming a child".
