"We express our deepest grief and solidarity with our Jewish friends around the world after the heinous violence perpetrated against congregants of the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh".

Shackled to a wheelchair, the man accused of shooting 11 worshipers to death at a Pittsburgh synagogue made a stony-faced and largely silent appearance on Monday in a federal courtroom, where he was ordered held without bond for the deadliest attack ever on America's Jewish community.

He previously said 22 charges filed against Bowers - counts of obstruction of exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death and counts of use of a firearm to commit murder during and in relation to a crime of violence - are each punishable by death.

Funerals for the victims are expected to begin Tuesday. "He is supporting the families and whatever they wish", spokeswoman Amie Downs said. Federal prosecutors charged him with 29 criminal counts including violence and firearms offences, and violating USA civil rights laws.

Asked if the president plans to tone down his rally rhetoric and personal attacks on Democrats, Sanders said he will "continue to draw contrasts" and "continue to fight back" when his critics go after him.

Rabbi Brett Krichiver said earlier he hopes the service will give people from all walks of faith a chance to grieve together.

Tree of Life Rabbi Jeffrey Myers had a direct answer for CNN's Alisyn Camerota on Monday when she asked if President Trump would be welcomed into his synagogue: "Always".

Bowers shot his victims with an AR-15 - the weapon used in numerous nation's mass shootings - and three handguns, all of which he owned legally and had a licence to carry, according to a law enforcement official who wasn't authorised to discuss the ongoing investigation, and who spoke on Sunday on condition of anonymity.

Six other people were wounded, including four police officers.

He had a pair of birdies on the par 5s, laid up on the reachable par-4 16th and made birdie, and wound up with a 5-under 67. The American enjoyed a strong day on the Sheshan International Golf Course, as he carded an eight-under-par round of 64.

Bowers was taken to the Allegheny General Hospital after the shooting, where he is said to have been treated by a Jewish nurse.

Though Bowers hid his anti-Semitic rage from his neighbors, it was on full display online. "Our attention and our focus is going to be on them, and we don't have public safety that we can take away from what is needed in order to do both", Peduto said, according to a transcript of his remarks provided to The Washington Post.

The funeral for the Rosenthal brothers will take place on Tuesday at noon at Temple Rodef Shalom in Squirrel Hill.

The man who allegedly opened fire at the Tree of Life synagogue reportedly posted a message on the social media platform Gab before the shooting - and mentioned a nonprofit organization dedicated to humanitarian aid for refugees.

The toll also included professors, dentists and physicians.

"I think that at some point the anger will die down, the process will unfold, and we might be able to get to the point where we could do what they did", he told Pittsburgh's Action 4 News. "I'm also going to the hospital to see the officers and some of the people that were so badly hurt".

Bowers was a long-haul trucker who worked for himself, authorities said.

Barry Werber says members of the synagogue's New Light Congregation were in the basement and beginning to pray when they heard crashing coming from upstairs. Little else was known about the suspect, who had no apparent criminal record.

Werber says he called 911 but was afraid to say anything for fear of making noise as gunshots echoed upstairs.
