Missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi died after fight in consulate: Saudi Arabia

In a separate statement on Saturday, the Saudi public prosecutor said a fight broke out between Khashoggi and people who met him in the consulate, leading to his death.

"The announcement that Jamal Khashoggi was killed while brawling with a team of more than a dozen dispatched from Saudi Arabia is not credible", Schiff said in a statement.

"They agreed to spend $450 billion on buying in and investing in the United States, so I hope we can keep that open", he said.

As horrifying as Gianforte's behavior was, there is of course no comparison to torture and murder, which is what is now believed to have happened to Khashoggi.

The case has presented Trump with one of the most acute foreign policy crises of his almost two-year presidency.

"MbS had no knowledge of this specific operation and certainly did not order a kidnapping or murder of anybody", a Saudi official said on condition of anonymity.

Saudi Arabia will now begin a full investigation of the incident, with a deadline of one month to produce a report.

All of the identified individuals have since left Turkey.

The two-star general's position as spokesman made him a household name and he was soon part of the crown prince's inner circle.

In related developments, senior government officials from the United States, France, Britain and the Netherlands cancelled out of an investment conference in Saudi Arabia amid questions over the kingdom's involvement in Khashoggi's disappearance.

Turkish authorities said days ago, that they had an audio recording of the incident in which they say Khashoggi was interrogated, which led to a struggle, which led to Jamal Khashoggi's death.

He disclosed he would work with Congress to orchestrate an appropriate U.S. response.

"I think it's a good first step, it's a big step". Authorities said 18 Saudi suspects were in custody for his slaying and intelligence officials had been fired.

Bob Menendez, the top US Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called for sanctions, saying "we need to keep up global pressure" on the kingdom.

Turkish crime scene investigators this week searched the Saudi Consulate building in Istanbul and the nearby residence of the Saudi consul general, and came out carrying bags and boxes.

Trump termed it an "important first step".

"We're going to find out who knew what when and where and we'll figure it out".

Further, he stressed for the need for a thorough investigation into the scribe's death.

U.S. lawmakers, rights groups and Khashoggi's fellow journalists expressed scepticism at the Saudi account.

Representative Mike Coffman, a Colorado Republican, said in a statement he posted on Twitter that "as a sitting member of the House Armed Services Committee and a Marine Corps combat veteran, our country must stand up for our values and demand our "allies" respect human rights - I did not fight to have us looks the other way".

"This is far from the end and we need to keep up the worldwide pressure".

Turkish officials say the journalist was ambushed by Saudi agents, murdered and his body dismembered, when he went to the consulate on October 2 to obtain documents for his marriage.

"They must have thought they could somehow get away with it because the Trump administration wouldn't hold them to account", Sawers said.

The Colorado lawmaker, who serves on the House Armed Services Committee, urged Trump to immediately recall the acting USA ambassador from Saudi Arabia.

The Trump administration, meanwhile - led by the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner - has drawn ever closer to the Saudis as it fashions a strategy in the Middle East that revolves around the kingdom. "We are saddened to hear confirmation of Mr. Khashoggi's death, and we offer our deepest condolences to his family, fiancée, and friends".
