UK Brexit agreement deal set to be announced

And Downing Street insisted that Mrs May would never agree a Brexit deal with the EU which "traps" the United Kingdom permanently in a customs union.

Britain has proposed that it would continue to follow European Union customs rules after Brexit as a fall-back option to keep the border open, until a wider trade deal is agreed that avoids the need for frontier checks.

The weekend was meant to be a chance to crack the Irish border so that the officials could meet Wednesday with some progress at least giving the signal that a final deal could be signed in mid-November.

The September EU summit in Salzburg ended in a diplomatic disaster for Prime Minister Theresa May, yet she used the occasion to her advantage.

Writing in today's Irish News, deputy leader Ms O'Neill accused the unionist party of pursuing a "reckless agenda".

And Tory MP Nadine Dorries suggested Mr Davis should be installed as interim leader, claiming that was the only way to secure the kind of free-trade deal Brexit demanded by Eurosceptics.

Under the current plans, if there is a Brexit deal the transition period will last until the end of 2020, during which the United Kingdom will accept Brussels' rules without having a seat at the table when they are decided.

The UK and the European Union are on course to miss this week's key milestone on the road to a Brexit deal after talks broke up in stalemate on Sunday, people familiar with the matter said.

He also said the fact that the European Union is preparing for a no-deal scenario "must not, under any circumstances, lead us away from making every effort to reach the best agreement possible" for all involved.

"I am cautiously optimistic that we can take steps next week but a lot depends on the talks happening in the coming days", Rutte said at his weekly press conference.

The hard work starts for May on Tuesday when she will rake over the Irish border issue with her cabinet, amid speculation that further ministers could quit if the PM ploughs on with her proposals.

Former Brexit secretary David Davis has urged a Cabinet revolt against the Prime Minister's approach to the talks.

Raab's office said: "With several big issues still to resolve, including the Northern Ireland backstop, it was jointly agreed that face-to-face talks were necessary".

But EU President Donald Tusk said in a letter to members of the European Council that while he encouraged all involved to "remain hopeful and determined... at the same time, responsible as we are, we must prepare the EU for a no-deal scenario, which is more likely than ever before".

When speaking to ITV News, Mr Coveney said the backstop "needs to be there unless, or until, something better comes along".

Lobbying of May from all sides of the Brexit debate has increased in recent weeks as London and Brussels edge closer to an agreement on a draft withdrawal treaty to cover the divorce terms, a transition period and a solution for Northern Ireland. "The public does not like it. Parliament will not vote for it", he wrote.

A senior British government source played down reports that a deal had already been done.

The head of a Northern Irish party that props up her government also raised the stakes, saying it was ready to trigger a so-called no deal Brexit to prevent what it called "the annexation" of the British province by the EU.

"As the chief negotiator has always said, Brexit is a lose-lose situation so we have to make our utmost to be not 100 percent lose-lose", he noted, referring to EU Brexit pointman Michel Barnier.
