Some PS4 owners are experiencing a frightening glitch that's forcing them to factory reset their consoles.

The first report of this specific bug was from a Reddit user who, after playing an online match of Rainbow Six: Siege, received a cryptic message from a member of the opposing team.

For starters, users can lock down their PSN message permissions to only allow messages from friends. And the only way to get it working again is to factory reset the console - losing all installations and locally stored save games in the process.

Reddit user Qraeshawn said: "I had a player named Zilla-Trickz that sent me 7 messages saying: Fortnite [] 3, but the heart was an emoji".

The simplest solution to prevent this from happening in future is to turn off messages from folks you don't know. You can do this on your console, web browser, or smartphone app.

In order to protect your hardware from this kind of attack, users are encouraged to change their message settings to receive messages from "friends only" or "no one" under Personal Info/Messages, according to Polygon.

So far, Sony have made no official statement on the matter, however outlets such as Kotaku, Polygon and others have sought comment or clarification from Sony on the matter. Reports indicate that some PS4 consoles continue to operate unstably even after the message is deleted; in that instance a rebuild of the PS4 system database has been reported to fix any lingering issues.
