Leslie weakens from hurricane as it nears Portugal, Spain

Portugal's weather service issued red warnings - its highest level - for high winds or risky coastal conditions for 13 of its 18 mainland districts, including Lisbon, where it said the storm's effects will start to be felt around 6 p.m. Leslie could be the fiercest storm to hit the country since 1842.

However, Hurricane Leslie, which formed on 23 September, was downgraded to a tropical storm before it made landfall.

Even before nightfall the sea was beginning to surge at beaches south of the Portuguese capital, with surfers ordered to return to shore.

"As Tropical Storm Michael turns to the Commonwealth, I want to urge all Virginians to prepare for the serious possibility of flash floods, tropical storm force winds, tornadoes, and power outages", said Northam.

Maritime authorities have advised fishermen now at sea to return to the nearest port and Portugal's TAP airline cancelled seven flights to and from Lisbon.

The report also put average Iranian heavy crude price at $68.70 since beginning of 2018 up to the report's publishing day. Energy Information Administration (EIA) on Thursday reported rises in both crude oil and gasoline inventories.

Gusty winds, heavy rainfall and large swell will impact Portugal and parts of Spain tonight and early Sunday.

It is rare for an Atlantic hurricane to reach the Iberian Peninsula, and it is thought this could be the most powerful to hit Portugal since 1842.

At least seven people were killed by the storm in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina from falling trees and other hurricane-related incidents, according to state officials.

It will arrive at the central coast Saturday night and continue into Spain as a weaker storm.

Spain's civil protection agency said the storms could still be "very strong locally" and that heavy rain was forecast for the north and east.
