Bloomberg, the billionaire former mayor of NY, announced Wednesday that he has registered as a Democrat, a move certain to stoke further speculation about whether he intends to run for president in 2020.

Bloomberg announced his new political affiliation in an Instagram post, warning that Democrats are "so badly" needed to keep the government in check.

"I'm just way away", Bloomberg told the paper, "from where the Republican Party is today", adding that he also doesn't fall in line with all of the Democratic Party's politics.

He later became an Independent.

On Wednesday morning he posted a photo on Instagram of him signing the paperwork, with a caption that reads, "At key points in U.S. history, one of the two parties has served as a bulwark against those who threaten our Constitution".

Bloomberg did not say when he might make a decision on running for president.

Bloomberg considered running for president in 2016, and said on September 17 he could not run as a Republican. "Two years ago at the Democratic Convention, I warned of those threats", Bloomberg said.

A Bloomberg spokesman declined any further comment.

Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg speaks at the Bloomberg Global Business forum in New York last month.

He has entertained the idea of a presidential run before but never generated enough traction to establish himself as the kind of outsize political force his fellow NY billionaire has become.

Mr. Bloomberg, formally an independent, has changed parties several times over the past two decades. "I believe that the Republicans have not done what they should have done in terms of providing some counterbalance to the executive branch".

And Bloomberg has been a life-long social liberal, supporting - often with millions of dollars - such progressive causes as environmental protection, strict gun control, and abortion as a fundamental human right.
