Mental health in schools: we need to make it count

Wednesday, October 10, is World Mental Health Day; an annual awareness and education initiative spearheaded by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH).

She said depression is the third leading cause of disease while suicide is the second leading cause among youths of 15 to 29 years. Many more people - one in four, in fact - will have mental health issues at some point in their lives. "And we can all be a part of a new movement - including people who have faced mental illness themselves - to call on governments and industry to put mental health at the top of their agendas". To do this, we need to re-balance the curriculum by giving health and wellbeing the same importance as literacy and numeracy, and creating mentally healthy schools where pupils and teachers can thrive. The approach to the mental health must cover the full spectrum which is from day today wellness to many disabling conditions.

Half of all mental illness begins by the age of 14, but most cases go undetected and untreated, according to the World Health Organization.

The South Wales-based business has been working with mental health charity Mates in Mind to break the stigma surrounding mental health in the construction industry and train key members of staff to recognise mental health issues in colleagues and help counsel them through their problems. However, the service felt many of these emergency retrievals could be avoided if more appropriate and comprehensive mental health services were available in remote and rural areas.

There are a lot of talks on championing good mental health, but one of the most powerful statements was from the American singer-songwriter, Lady Gaga.
