Kavanaugh has denied the claim and others that later surfaced.

Ford's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee - followed by Kavanaugh's at times tearful and at times angry rebuttal - deepened the partisan divide in the Senate and inspired large protests.

The president - whose Republicans fear losing at least the lower chamber of Congress - predicted that Democrats would pay for their attempts to block the confirmation, especially during the lurid debate over decades-old sexual assault allegations.

As Michael Tomasky points out, with Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr., there are now four justices who were confirmed by Senators representing a national minority, and if Trump gets to fill one more seat, a majority of the court will likely have been confirmed in this manner.

"I want to apologize to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the awful pain and suffering you have been forced to endure", Trump said at the evening White House event.

At the official swearing-in event at the White House on Monday, Trump said Kavanaugh had been a victim of "a campaign of political and personal destruction based on lies and deception" adding that Kavanaugh had been "proven innocent". And pundits presumed POTUS meant to take a victory lap after his nominee got the Senate's stamp of approval by a slim 50-48 margin following a very divisive confirmation battle, in which Kavanaugh faced multiple sexual misconduct allegations, but especially that he had sexually assaulted Ford when he was in high school.

Brett Kavanaugh is about to hear his first arguments as a Supreme Court justice.

Nikki Haley Steps Down as UN Ambassador
Prior to becoming governor, she represented Lexington County in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2005 to 2011. President Donald Trump has accepted the resignation of UN Ambassador Nikki Haley , multiple outlets reported Tuesday.

Justice Kavanaugh will be closely scrutinised from his first day on the bench.

"I think a lot of Democrats are going to vote Republican", he said.

Kavanaugh said at the swearing-in ceremony on Monday that "the Senate confirmation process was contentious and emotional". However, the Republican cautioned that "it remains to be seen whether this lasts for the next three weeks or not".

The justices on Tuesday left in place an August 2017 ruling the new Supreme Court justice wrote that struck down an Obama-era Environmental Protection Agency rule.

Senator Chris Coons of DE called impeachment talk "premature", while House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said it "would not be my plan" to impeach the justice.

Kavanaugh is expected to begin his tenure by hearing two cases dealing with matters of robbery and burglary.

"The Supreme Court is a team of nine".

A petition to impeach Justice Kavanaugh has more than 150,000 signatures.
