A knife attack has left multiple people wounded in a daycare center in Queens, New York, reports, citing police, say.

NY reports that authorities say the stabbings happened just before 4am on Friday. The woman was taken to a hospital and is now in police custody.

The injured infants included two boys and a girl, police said.

It is not clear how old the three infants were, but one of them is in critical condition according to police.

The suspect, a woman who is reportedly 52 years old, was found in the basement with self-inflicted knife wounds to her wrists.

Ms Barwick, a mother of two, would likely have bled to death without the quick-thinking actions of people in nearby boats. A rescue helicopter that scrambled to pick her up was just 15 minutes away from the scene due to an earlier operation.

Her identity has not been released.

The woman also stabbed one female co-worker and the father of one of the infants, police said.

Police said it was not immediately clear why she attacked the children and adults. Another adult who was hurt is a woman who works at the centre.

First responders took the suspect and victims to New York-Presbyterian/Queens hospital.

Other children at the day care weren't injured, authorities said.
