Carter was ran over when Suge Knight tried to speed out of the parking lot at Tam's Burgers in Compton where a portion of the movie was being shot.

Former hip-hop mogul Suge Knight was sentenced to 28 years in prison Thursday for manslaughter after he pleaded no contest to a 2015 hit-and-run. Jury selection in the murder trial had been set to start on Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court. He is expected to be sentenced to 28 years in state prison on the charge. Authorities claimed Knight intentionally drove his Truck into Carter and another man, Cle "Bone" Sloan, who was severely injured. The trial was speculated to begin on October 1st and would have involved unusually tight security, including the non-publication of a witness list before proceedings began, and identity suppression of some of the witnesses called. He said he feared Carter and Sloan were going to shoot him and his only option was to flee.

During Thursday's hearing, Knight answered Judge Ronald Coen's questions, loudly and quickly saying "no contest" when the judge asked for his plea.

The agreement also absolves Knight in two other cases, both from 2014.

Knight fled the scene, but the incident was captured on surveillance video.

Ms Barwick, a mother of two, would likely have bled to death without the quick-thinking actions of people in nearby boats. A rescue helicopter that scrambled to pick her up was just 15 minutes away from the scene due to an earlier operation.

Although Knight reportedly counted Carter as a friend, prosecutors contended the collision was deliberate.

Knight was accused in January 2015 of running over two men, killing one of them, during an argument.

Knight, left, sits next to his defence attorney Albert DeBlanc Jr. while listening to the terms of his plea of no contest to voluntary manslaughter.

Knight and N.W.A. member Andre "Dr. Dre" Young founded the wildly popular Death Row Records label together in 1991. He has prior felony convictions for armed robbery and assault with a gun.
