Amazon Could Spend $3 Billion on ‘Go’ Stores, Analyst Says

That would include having about 10 Amazon Go stores by the end of 2018 and expanding to approximately 50 in key metropolitan markets next year, according to the report.

The cashierless shops allow customers to load up on snacks and walk out without the hassle of standing in line as the store sends a bill later.While Seattle and Chicago are already living the dream, Amazon is now considering a plan to open upwards of 3,000 cashierless stores over the course of the next few years, according to AdAge.

Amazon opened its first Amazon Go store in its hometown of Seattle in 2016. No queues, no waiting, it says.

Amazon is said to be considering opening 3,000 of its cashierless stores by 2021.

What's more, Amazon has grown its advertising business 242 percent since 2017, eMarketer said.

As a matter of perspective, 7-eleven, the largest convenience store chain in the world operates 8,600 stores in the United States, and in 2017 generated $14.33 billion in U.S. sales alone. The stores could also help Amazon become a bigger player in the pharmacy business because it agreed to buy PillPack, an online drugstore, in June. It now has three in the city and one in Chicago.

The checkout counter-free store relies on computer vision, machine learning algorithms and sensors to track what customers are taking off the shelves - or putting back on the shelves - and purchasing.

The most recent Amazon Go stores are more like the first in terms of size and offerings.

Amazon did not immediately respond to FOX Business' request for comment. Amazon also operates or plans to open 18 bookstores, as well as a range of smaller pop-up stores in malls and Kohl's locations. It would also give Amazon a much expanded footprint of physical stores in the United States, adding to its more than 350 Whole Foods stores.

Amazon may look for ways to trim that cost in future stores, Bloomberg reported, perhaps by limiting the grocery selection to primarily higher-margin prepared food, which would also require fewer cameras.
