Novak Djokovic defeated Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to win the U.S. Open title.

Former world number one Djokovic equalled Pete Sampras' haul of 14 slams after outlasting Del Potro 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 to lift the trophy for a third time in NY.

Djokovic, playing in his eighth final in NY and already the champion in 2011 and 2015, is now just three Slams behind Rafael Nadal and six back from the all-time record 20 held by Roger Federer.

The 31-year-old Serb is now just three behind Rafael Nadal and six back from Federer.

Naomi Osaka vaulted 12 spots to a career-high No. 7 in the WTA rankings following her first career Grand Slam title.

After months of struggle and doubt, Novak Djokovic's remarkable comeback has reached its peak. But supported by a dozen or so friends from home, whose "Ole!" choruses rang around the arena, he climbed up the rankings to a career-high No. 3 by thundering his 100 miles per hour forehands and 135 miles per hour serves.

Djokovic's victory, coupled with his July triumph at Wimbledon, ties him with Pete Sampras for the most men's Grand Slam singles titles.

Their showdown Sunday is del Potro's first appearance in a major championship match since he won the 2009 trophy at Flushing Meadows. He almost quit tennis in 2015, after four wrist surgeries that wouldn't let him regain the form that carried him past Roger Federer to win the 2009 U.S. Open.

But instead of that victory proving a launchpad for a sustained challenge at the Grand Slams, Del Potro battled wrist injuries which required four surgeries.

"I'd just like to congratulate Juan Martin. for still having faith, for still having belief in himself", said Djokovic, who gave his pal a hug at the net, and then went over to console del Potro as he wiped away tears at his sideline seat.

"Difficult times, but you learn through adversity, " Djokovic said.

Newly-crowned US Open champion Novak Djokovic said he was inspired to take up tennis after watching Pete Sampras in action and that matching his Grand Slam record is a dream-come-true moment for him.

"I really wish him all the best".

Roger Federer, beaten by Del Potro in the Indian Wells final in March, was impressed by del Potro's willingness to reinvent his game. "I'm glad I managed to do that". He knows he is one of my friends on Tour and knows he is one player I want to see win titles. Del Potro misses a backhand giving Djokovic another game point, but Del Potro saves it with a scintillating forehand that Djokovic can't get it into the court.

The win at Flushing Meadows enabled Djokovic to complete a Wimbledon-US Open double after lifting his fourth Wimbledon title earlier this year at the All England Club in London.

With the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof closed as heavy rain swept NY, conditions were slow and sluggish.
