The mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, shot back at President Donald Trump minutes after his Thursday morning claim that the death toll from last year's Hurricane Maria was grossly inflated. Last month, the New York Times reported that 10 trailers of food and other supplies were found rotting in a parking lot in Puerto Rico, where they were devoured by rats.

Where does the official death toll come from?

With Hurricane Florence fast approaching the southeastern USA and due to make landfall on Thursday, Trump pointed to his administration's emergency preparedness, saying he handled the situation in Puerto Rico well, despite what critics said.

Ed Markey (D-Mass.). "May God bless the souls of the almost 3,000 Americans that died in Puerto Rico and may he take pity on your soul, Mr. President".

Celebrity chef José Andrés, who brought a crew of volunteers to help feed victims of Maria in the wake of the storm, called for an "official independent investigation" into what happened to the stash of drinking water.

The study concluded that the initial death toll of 64 only included those killed directly by hurricanes Maria and Irma - either by drowning, flying debris or building collapse. This comes despite the recent indications that nearly 3,000 people died from the storm and a direct result of the after effects. The new report looks at how power outages and medical infrastructure also impacted lives and led to deaths on the stricken island.

'You have people who died after the storm passed because they fell off their roof making repairs, they died in auto crashes because the stoplights were off, you have chainsaw accidents, you have accidents with people cleaning up debris, ' he said.

In a further statement, Wednesday, Trump said his administration did an "unappreciated great job" in supporting Puerto Rico despite the inaccessibility of the island, poor electricity and an "incompetent mayor".
