Verizon 5G Home subscribers also get first dibs on purchasing new 5G mobile devices when they hit the market. In its 5G Home announcement Verizon said it expects to be the first carrier to offer 5G mobile service, though its rivals may have something to say about that.

Verizon has announced that it will be launching its 5G home broadband service on October 1 across parts of Sacramento, Los Angeles, Houston, and Indianapolis, with the service to provide typical network speeds of 300Mbps and peak speeds of 1Gbps. But credit where it's due, this does seem to be the first commercial service using some kind of 5G tech, so Verizon is entitled to crow.

Verizon says 5G Home subscribers can expect average network speeds of around 300 Mbps with peak speeds of almost 1 Gig and no data caps. After that, though, the cost goes up considerably: Verizon wireless customers with a qualifying phone plan will pay $50 a month while the service will run subscribers without Verizon Wireless $70 a month.

"Typical" download speeds will be around 300Mbps, and the max speed of almost 1Gbps will be available "depending on location", Verizon said. "There are no additional hardware costs".

Pope summons bishops for February abuse prevention summit
A Vatican spokesperson said the meeting of the heads of national Catholic bishops conferences would take place February 21-24. All bishops are required to submit their resignation at the age of 75, but the Pope does not have to accept it.

"We spent the last three years driving the industry to bring 5G to consumers as soon as possible", said Ronan Dunne, head of Verizon's wireless business. Those prices include taxes and fees, and the service does not require an annual contract.

Early users of the service in those four cities will get it for free for the first three months. Additionally, Verizon will not be putting any data cap on the plan. Thus, the 5G home internet offering will run on a proprietary version of the standard.

Installation and a free router is also included, along with router upgrades when they become available in 2019.
