He shot and killed a man and then turned his gun on his spouse, killing her, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood told a news conference.

Six people were shot and killed Wednesday night in Bakersfield in what the Kern County Sheriff's Office called a "mass shooting", according to The Bakersfield Californian.

He proceeded to run from the area and went to a nearby residence where he shot and killed two more people.

The woman and child escaped and the man drove off before a sheriff's deputy saw him, Mr Youngblood said.

Bakersfield is a city of approximately 380,000 residents in southern California, about 100 miles north-northwest of Los Angeles.

The gunman first showed up at a trucking business with his wife shortly before 5.30pm local time, where he confronted another man.
