Especially with NY starting a rookie quarterback, Sam Darnold.

Nearly 50 years later, a new-look broadcast re-introduced itself with Sam Darnold.

Those that watch the game and grade each play were only mildly impressed. And, they may have gotten yelled at more. All three phases being successful, scoring on all three phases. (Those are) a couple of pretty good defenses.

The rookie quarterback steadied himself quickly. His performance alone was cause for excitement Monday, but on this night, NY seemed to have a pretty solid cast around him as well.

The New York Jets' defense jumped all over Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions on Monday night.

"Give the Jets credit". That's just the way things are The headlines were written in advance for whether he was the hero, goat or, like he was in this game, one of many who played very well.

"I told those guys in there, 'I'll take this one, '" Stafford said.

NY led 17-10 at halftime. Andre Roberts, who had already delivered one big return in the first quarter, tip-toed the sideline for a 78-yard punt return to the house. But on "Monday Night Football", his NFL career started in the worst way possible. But his first throw looked ill-advised from the moment it left his hand, floating toward the left sideline, where Diggs picked it off. He not only showed he could play well in prime time on the road, he also showed he could handle adversity. Darnold became the youngest opening day quarterback in National Football League history, and his introduction to the National Football League was rough.

The Lions have worked and planned all offseason to be stronger and tougher, and they were neither against the Jets. It was the most lopsided loss for Detroit in an opener since a 45-0 shellacking at Washington in 1991.

Near the end of the onslaught, visiting Jets fans crowded behind the NY bench and led a "J-E-T-S!"

They scored 31 straight in the third quarter to pull away, sending Detroit's fans for the exits and setting off a jolly green party in the Motor City. That streak is now over.

"We was able to just take advantage of plays and stuff that we knew that they run a lot of", Jets cornerback Morris Claiborne said. Theo Riddick is going to be the guy they turn to in passing situations and Ameer Abdullah , their starter previous year, could be the one they turn to if Johnson and Blount can't get anything going.

Working together with the D-line, the Jets held Detroit to just 39 yards on fifteen carries. Blount ran four times for minus-3 yards. "We knew his signals. There's a lot of harsh criticism, from what I'm told", Garafolo said.

"He's always smooth under pressure, he doesn't get rattled, so we weren't anxious whatsoever", Lee said.

Roberts' 78-yard return gave NY a three-touchdown advantage.
