"In other words, the major hurricane track, currently, is basically confined to the south of the Hawaiian Islands".

Even if Olivia does not arrive with hurricane force winds, Caldwell said, "I don't think we should let our guard down". As a result, a Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Warning are in effect for the Cabo Verde islands of Santiago, Fogo and Brava. "Now is the time to prepare".

"Urge people to pay attention inland and promise themselves now that they're not going to drive their auto across any water-covered roads or drive their vehicle around any barricaded roads that are closed", Knabb says. Take enough just for yourself (or) just use our water supply.

Scientists expect a busy hurricane season through the end of November.

"Don't return things", he said.

Obama Goes After Trump: 6 Big Lines
Former president Barack Obama said Donald Trump is "capitalising on resentment that politicians have been fanning for years". Trump was a "symptom, not the cause" of divisions in American society.

With maximum sustained winds near 85 miles per hour, Olivia is forecast to remain a hurricane for the next couple of days.

At 11 a.m. today, the storm was 660 miles east-northeast of Hilo and 825 miles east of Honolulu. Its maximum sustained winds were 110 miles per hour.

The NHC has also issued an advisory for the Eastern Pacific on Tropical Storm Paul, and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center has issued advisories for Hurricane Olivia, which is moving quickly westward toward Hawaii. Olivia is forecast to stay a hurricane for the next couple of days while the system is experiencing light shear, balanced by very dry air aloft and marginal but warming SSTs.

East-facing shores of the Big Island are under a high surf warning until 6 p.m. this evening - although an extension of the warning into tomorrow is possible - as a swell from Hurricane Norman strikes the island. Thereafter, a mid-level ridge over Hawaii will impart some northerly steering flow on Olivia, which should cause the cyclone to move west-southwestward toward the main Hawaiian Islands.
