Spain were the better side but had to work for a 2-1 UEFA Nations League comeback win against England at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night.

"Big moments you need a firm referee who don't, under the pressure, get wrong decisions, basically".

England team-mates expressed relief about Shaw's injury, with manager Gareth Southgate equally relieved.

Despite the joy at reaching the last four in Russia, England have now lost three consecutive games for the first time in 30 years.

"We are under no illusion that Spain were the better team for long periods", he said.

"We aren't able to do that when teams press high against us yet".

Shaw, who revealed this week he came close to losing his leg after a serious break suffered while playing for United against PSV in 2015, was making his first global appearance for 18 months.

"We've got quite a few players who are short of fitness and short of a bit of sharpness".

England made a strong start when Luke Shaw found Marcus Rashford with a perfectly timed through ball with the Three Lions taking a 1-0 lead.

"Danny stood there, De Gea went up, he caught the ball but as he went down he fell on Danny, no foul or anything, and the ball has dropped".

It was a packed 90 minutes for England's opening Nations League match, with games against Spain and Croatia - both home and away - yet to come.

However, the United 'keeper produced the sort of stunning save he does routinely at club level to deny Rashford an instant equaliser with a powerful header from point-blank range. From a tactical viewpoint it's evident that England suffer against the big sides when they play Jordan Henderson as a sole defensive midfielder.

The match was halted for almost five minutes soon after the restart when England defender Shaw went down after a collision with Dani Carvajal and had to be stretchered off the field.
