Trump's comments came after Kim reportedly said his faith in the U.S. president was unchanged and that Pyongyang aimed to achieve denuclearisation within Trump's first term in office, which is due to end in January 2020.

Past attendees have included former secretary of state Madeleine Albright, who on a 2000 visit to Pyongyang, met with then-North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, who brought her along to the games.

The summit being planned will be the first time in more than a decade that a South Korean leader has visited the North Korean capital.

The President hailed Kim's comments on social media within minutes of the announcement, saying "Kim Jong Un of North Korea proclaims 'unwavering faith in President Trump.' Thank you to Chairman Kim".

Although Kim promised Trump in June to achieve "complete" denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula in return for security guarantees from Washington, scepticism has been lingering about North Korea's intention to take concrete steps toward it.

-South Korean alliance or lead to the withdrawal of the 28,500 US troops stationed in South Korea to prevent an North Korean attack, according to Chung.

A proper peace treaty was never signed - neither side has seemed willing to give way.

Chung Eui-yong, Moon's national security adviser and the head of the South Korean delegation to Pyongyang, said Kim told him that he still had faith in Trump despite diplomatic setbacks.

The newly appointed USA envoy for the North, Stephen Biegun, last month said Kim had promised "final, fully verified denuclearization" at the summit. Kim has repeatedly said he wants a step-by-step disarmament process in which each of his actions is reciprocated with corresponding outside concessions. "He made that clear", Chung said, according to the news agency.

North Korea has accused the United States of making "unilateral and gangster-like" demands for denuclearization and holding back on the end-of-war declaration.

Kim also continues using the term "complete denuclearization" to suggest he expects American nuclear forces to be withdrawn from striking range of North Korea-a tall order given the very long range of USA nuclear forces.

Kim told visiting South Korean envoys Wednesday he was ready to accept "stronger measures" to restrict his nuclear program and wanted a declaration with the formally end the Korean War, the officials said.

Under discussion since has been whether North Korean denuclearisation or declaring an end to the Korean War should come first.

USA officials have previously said they have already made conciliatory gestures, such as halting joint military exercises with South Korea.

The summit, from 18-20 September, will be the third inter-Korean summit this year.

At its last military parade in February, Pyongyang displayed what appeared to be intercontinental ballistic missiles like the Hwasong-15 missile, capable of delivering a nuclear weapon to any city on the USA mainland, in a thinly veiled threat to Washington.

"The withdrawal of the USA forces, the end of the US military presence and domination is the demand of the Korean nation and the irresistible trend of the times", it said.

They presented South Korea's blueprint for economic cooperation, including reconnecting severed cross-border railways and roads, and urged Kim to take steps toward denuclearization.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told a conference in Washington on Tuesday that the USA intelligence assessment of North Korea's nuclear intentions had not changed.
