Sep 5, 2018; New York, NY, USA; Novak Djokovic of Serbia hits a backhand against John Millman of Australia (not pictured) in a quarter-final match on day ten of the 2018 U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Millman, though, also leaves Flushing Meadows a victor and with renewed belief that he can challenge for major spoils following his stirring run to the second week of a grand slam for the first time.

Nishikori along with Naomi Osaka became the first Japanese man and woman to reach the semifinals of the same Grand Slam.

Djokovic moved a step closer to a third championship at Flushing Meadows and 14th Grand Slam title overall by eliminating Millman 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Djokovic downed Millman 6-3 6-4 6-4 in a drama-charged war of attrition to end the unseeded Australian's gallant run and reach his 11th semi-final in NY.

But after laboring through the heat in her previous match, Tsurenko said she was sick Wednesday, waking up with a sore throat and not breathing well. Nishikori said this week that he was nervous once that match began, but this one was nothing like that day.

He will meet Kei Nishikori, who defeated his 2014 final opponent Marin Cilic 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4, in the semifinals on Friday. "This has been definitely the toughest US Open in the last, you know, 10 years that I have played in, in terms of conditions".

Novak Djokovic of Serbia has secured his spot in the US Open semifinals after beating Australia's John Millman in straight sets. "Ever", said John Isner, the highest-ranked American man. "I didn't want to show this kind of game in front of this big crowd, but unfortunately I'm just not able to play now".

Atlanta's defense kept it in the game, and the Falcons had an opportunity down in the red zone to earn a victory in the game's final seconds.

"He apologised for going to change [clothes] in the second set but I said "it's OK, I need the rest".

The temperature clocked in at 92 degrees.

Djokovic was tied 2-2 with Millman when Millman had to tell the chair umpire he was just way too sweaty to continue without a break.

Nadal and 2009 US Open champion Del Potro have met twice in Grand Slams this year, at the French Open and Wimbledon with Nadal winning on both occasions.

"I was struggling, he was struggling, we were all sweating, changing clothes". I'm happy to come back, make semis.

Initially, it looked like the match might follow a similar storyline from 2014 when seventh seeded Cilic took the opening set from a sluggish Nishikori.

Meanwhile, Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki called out supporters in the stands at the Miami Open earlier this year for abuse suffered by both her and her supporters in her player box. "But like I said on court, I would back myself playing during the daytime also". Djokovic had been just 1-of-13 on break points, but got a gift as Millman double-faulted on break point at 4-4.

When Djokovic broke for the second time, the audience reacted with a polite, appreciative smattering of an applause.
