The controversial electric-car company was also hit with the departure of two key executives.

His brother Kimbal Musk told the newspaper that the reason Mr Musk "seems to attract drama" is because he is "so transparent, so open, in a way that can come back to bite him". "We're about to have to most fantastic quarter in our history, building and delivering more than twice as many cars as we did last quarter", Musk wrote.

But it was the puff of smoke that got the headlines.

The billionaire's fitness to run his company was questioned when he was filmed apparently taking a drag from a joint during a two-hour long interview with comedian and commentator Joe Rogan. "Or is it a cigar?"

"I'm not a regular smoker of weed; nearly never", Musk said.

Musk also warned that there would be "a lot of fuss and noise in the media" in the near term, seemingly an acknowledgement of the fallout from a 2 1/2-hour on-camera interview he participated in just hours earlier with comedy host Joe Rogan. Minutes later, Musk checked his phone.

Legal or not, it goes without saying that Twitter had a damn field day with Elon Musk smoking marijuana.

Amid talk of weed and fanciful sci-fi inventions, Musk did touch on more serious issues, namely sustainable energy.

Now, as the smoke clears, Musk's electric vehicle company finds itself facing dire straits.

Morton, formerly chief financial officer at disk-drive maker Seagate Technology, would have been involved in Musk's recently aborted plan to take Tesla private. That beating continued today, in part because of the optics of Musk's late-night, on-camera marijuana use.

The exodus from Tesla continued Friday morning, after news that two more executives had called it quits.

Morton indicated in a recent 8K filing that he left because of "the level of public attention placed on the company".

"This caused me to reconsider my future", Morton said.

"I don't think you would necessarily want to be me; you wouldn't like it that much", Musk quipped.

Make no mistake, even if the base is secured, Tesla's vital swing investors are backing away.

Tesla's board of directors is on the lookout for senior talent but is not actively searching for a chief operating officer, a person familiar with the board's thinking told Bloomberg News in August. Guillen, an eight-year Tesla veteran, helped build the assembly line in a tent that was added this year to bolster production of the company's crucially important Model 3 after the main assembly line was crippled by overuse of robots.

However, during an interview for The New York Times, Mr. Musk criticized the use of the drug while denying it had anything to do with attempting to take Tesla private.

Shareholders have sued Tesla, claiming that Musk's tweet constituted illegal market manipulation.
