Eagles fans sliding into bed in the wee hours Friday morning after Thursday night's opening week 18-12 victory over the Atlanta Falcons hopefully said a thank you prayer for Jim Schwartz's defense, because the offense has a lot of work to do.

It didn't go for a touchdown like the pass quarterback Nick Foles caught to help the Eagles beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

"It's great to have it at the right time if you can catch a team (off guard)", Foles said. We're disappointed that we didn't make those plays tonight.

Soon after, Jay Ajayi scored from the 1-yard line to give the Eagles the lead 10-6 on Thursday night.

'It was in our third-down men, ' Pederson said. "It just comes down to making a play here or there". He called it. It was the right time again.

Instead, Ryan took the blame.

Matt Ryan to Julio Jones failed again.

- Even with an exciting finish eerily similar to last January's playoff game, this was pretty much a forgetful opener to the National Football League season.

"Nobody was in. We were in goal line", Jones said of the heavy package and personnel on the field for that scoring opportunity. Wearing his gold Hall of Fame jacket, former safety Brian Dawkins riled up the sellout crowd with owner Jeffrey Lurie by his side and led a chorus of "Fly Eagles Fly". This game was ugly more often than not. Both teams looked rusty after many starters didn't play much in preseason.

Despite the fact that Ryan graded so well for us a year ago, his PFF grade on the road against the Eagles, and in the red zone, should have been an indication that it wouldn't be an easy night for the Falcons offense. He stayed in the tunnel for the last three weeks. Receivers DeAndre Carter and Mike Wallace combined for just one catch for 10 yards. Atlanta called timeout and he returned for the next play. The Falcons had 15 infractions (their most since 1990) for 135 yards (most since 2007). The teams would trade touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with the Falcons botching an extra point, and the Eagles scoring on a two-point conversion.

Linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill's stop on Devonta Freeman on the Falcons' initial drive for a 1-yard loss on fourth-and-goal at the Eagles' 1.

The good news for Ryan is that his defense bailed him out.

Is everybody feeling better now? After the game, head coach Dan Quinn talked about the team's need to improve their ability to score inside the 20, per Kelsey Conway. Long snapper Josh Harris had his streak of 103 consecutive games played end because of a hip injury. His knee brace came loose.
