The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says it has confirmed the first human case of West Nile Virus in the region this year.

Officials say the 72-year-old man was hospitalized, but is now recovering at home.

On Tuesday, the Department of Public Health raised the risk level from low to moderate in MA, marking just the second time since West Nile was first detected in the state that public officials have raised the risk level statewide.

Two human cases of WNV-associated illnesses have been identified this year in CT. The Toledo Sanitary District is reporting a very heavy and widespread area of mosquitoes infected with West Nile.

"Around Memorial Day, people should just start getting in the habit of putting mosquito repellent on - but now is the time when it becomes really important", he said. Most human cases typically occur between late July and October.

"Please continue to take precautions to avoid illness spread by mosquitos", said Dr. Bart Harvey.
