Trump offered Senator McCain's family his blessing on Twitter writing: "My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain". It was McCain who stopped Trump's repeal of Obamacare and Trump referred to the veteran as "not a war hero".

Arizona law stipulates that Ducey must select a successor from the same party as McCain, but the Republican governor has been ambiguous about who may fill the senator's seat.

Sen. John McCain will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol on Friday, a rare honor bestowed on only 31 people in 166 years.
