What did McCain's family say?

For a time, he stuck by the party's 2016 presidential nominee, Trump, even when Trump questioned his status as a war hero by saying: "I like people who weren't captured".

McCain served alongside Hillary Clinton in the Senate. Then McCain, scarred from brain surgery, swooped into the Senate chamber and, facing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, dramatically held up his hand.

John McCain is treated in a Hanoi hospital during the Vietnam War in November 1967. He asked for a moment of silence "in memory of his outstanding life". At the time, it was unclear when or if McCain would ever return to Washington. When the Senate in 2014 released a report on the CIA's harsh interrogation techniques at secret overseas facilities after the 9/11 attacks, McCain said the issue wasn't "about our enemies".

Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, of California, said that McCain "was a true American hero" who "was a lion of the Senate".

Former President Barack Obama is paying tribute to Arizona Sen. We saw this country as a place where anything is possible - and citizenship as our patriotic obligation to ensure it forever remains that way.

Perhaps the most striking example was when he challenged the George W. Bush administration and its "enhanced interrogation" of terrorism suspects.

"John McCain and I were members of different generations, came from completely different backgrounds, and competed at the highest level of politics".

Colleagues of McCain, 81, had been bracing for the worst for months as the Arizona senator retreated from public life to fight the disease. Mike Lee, R-Utah, in a statement released via tweet. "John McCain will cast a long shadow".

McCain, a Republican, won an Arizona House seat in 1982. I am blessed and humbled by our friendship. "I have every intention of returning here giving many of you pause to regret numerous nice things you said about me".

In October 2017, McCain blistered Trump's "America first" foreign policy approach as a "half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems".

McCain spoke truth to power. Saturday while honoring his legacy as a lawmaker and war hero. The senator's daughter, Meghan McCain, said in a tweet, "My family is deeply appreciative of all the love and generosity you have shown us during this past year".

McCain also never had particularly warm relations with the religious right, and populists still revile him for his scathing criticisms of President Trump, and for his scuttling of the last-ditch Republican effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

McCain disclosed in July 2017 that he had been diagnosed with a deadly form of brain cancer called glioblastoma.

More politicians remembered McCain including former Vice President Joe Biden, who wrote a statement on behalf of his family.

McCain, a giant of the Senate, survived years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam to become a leading actor on the political stage for decades. During five years in captivity, including more than two in solitary confinement, he suffered beatings and torture nearly daily.

McCain also helped co-author the landmark and bipartisan McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform that passed in 2002, and often spoke out about torture - an issue he was passionate about because of his experience as a prisoner of war.

McCain first ran for the Republican Presidential Nomination in 2000.

McCain tried to inject some youth and enthusiasm into his campaign with his selection of Palin, Alaska's governor, as his running mate. Bob Kerrey, a fellow Vietnam veteran, later recalled in crediting McCain for standing up to significant opposition.
