So far, no human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported by health officials in Lanark County.

"So, the type of mosquitoes that we are concerned about with West Nile are the Culex mosquitoes", said Andy Tyler, Regional Epidemiologist, Mesa County Public Health Department. In addition to the eight human cases, three MI blood donors have had WNV detected in their blood.

West Nile disease is a mosquito born illness that mimics flu symptoms. "And, there's about 1 in five people who may have mild illness and those symptoms include headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash". In rare cases, WNV can cause severe disease with symptoms such as disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, in-flammation of the brain, and going into a coma. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers when in mosquito infested areas.
