The 20-year-old was last seen on an evening jog near her home in Brooklyn, around 70 miles (112km) east of state capital Des Moines.

Even before the body was found and charges were filed, the case of the 20-year-old University of Iowa student has reverberated far beyond Iowa.

Authorities have announced a first-degree murder charge against Christian Rivera, 24, in the death of Iowa college student Mollie Tibbets. Rivera was employed and resided in Poweshiek County for four to seven years, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge Richard Rahn said at a press conference in Montezuma on the afternoon of August 21.

"I can't speak about the motive". Her family reported her missing after she did not show up for work the next day. I'm sure we'll hear more about that in the coming days.

"Should have never happened". We've had a huge impact, but the laws are so bad. "We're getting them changed".

"We get to know the family".

"As Iowans, we are heartbroken, and we are angry", Gov. Kim Reynolds wrote on Twitter.

President Donald Trump referred to Rivera's being in the country illegally during a campaign speech for a Republican U.S. Senate candidate in West Virginia.

A representative said law enforcement has "confirmed with Homeland Security Investigations that he is an illegal alien, and we believe he's been in this area [of Iowa] for four to seven years".

A judge has rejected a lawyer's request that the public be barred from an initial hearing for a man charged with killing an Iowa college student. It said he's from and lives in Guayabillo, Guerrero, Mexico.

Investigators explained that they used surveillance video to zero in on Rivera.

According to court documents, the suspect said in an interview that Tibbetts pulled out her cell phone and told Rivera she was going to "call the police" and that caused him to get angry.

The affidavit says he carried Tibbetts' body to a cornfield and covered her with corn stalks. Rivera told officers he then panicked, got mad and that he then "blocked" his "memory" which is what he supposedly does when he gets very upset and doesn't remember anything afterwards until he approached an intersection.

"Greg Willey, the vice president of Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa, also told the Associated Press the body found Tuesday is believed to be Tibbetts", reports Fox.

Rivera led authorities to Tibbetts' body, according to Rahn.

Mr Rivera allegedly saw Ms Tibbetts running and followed her before he says he "blacked out". Bail has been set for $1 million dollars.

Cristhian Bahena Rivera is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Mollie Tibbetts, who disappeared July 18 from Brooklyn, Iowa.

The search for Tibbetts involved officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, state and local agencies. They focused much of their efforts in and around Brooklyn, searching farm fields, ponds and homes.

Before she went missing, Tibbetts' brother dropped her off at her boyfriend's house so she could dog-sit, HLN reported.

At Brooklyn City Hall, city clerk Sheri Sharer said Tuesday was a sad day for the town.
