Jose Mourinho has said he will no longer be criticising individual Manchester United players in public, a major reversal of past patterns, following the abject performance in a 3-2 defeat at Brighton on Sunday.

According to Opta, this was only the 10th time in Premier League history that United have conceded three first-half goals. Maybe we didn't have attitude to break them, to kill them when we had to kill them, to go through the lines, and that's a lesson we have to keep in mind and play much better next game. Neither did Paul Pogba's late penalty after Duffy had brought down substitute Marouane Fellaini in stoppage time.

The Irish boss will be expecting a reaction from his side, and will quietly confident of getting a result especially after defeating United 1-0, to confirm their place in the Premier League when they visited the Amex last season.

Strengthening the heart of his defence was Mourinho's priority and it showed as Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly endured a torrid afternoon on England's south coast. "We made mistakes and were punished by our mistakes".

Mourinho accused City of lacking respect on Friday, claiming the club "can buy all the top players, but (they) cannot buy class". But from a mental point of view, the accumulation of the mistakes and the punishment of the mistakes with goals was giving confidence to a good team like Brighton, and took that confidence from us. "Mistakes that killed us".

"We hoped for more, we didn't get more, but now the season starts for us".

"The first half, I think you should ask him".

Glenn Murray and Shane Duffy scored twice in two minutes and, after Romelu Lukaku hit back, Bailly condeded a needless penalty which Pascal Gross converted via David de Gea's legs.

Two minutes later they doubled their lead when, after one ball had fizzed across the box, United failed to deal with the second and Duffy turned and fired into the corner.

His time at Old Trafford threatens to go the same way, particularly with Tottenham next up a week on Monday. However, there was little sign of Pogba leading United out of the mire as he and summer signing Fred, who cost a reported £52.5 million (57.9 million euros, $66.3 million) struggled to control the game in midfield.

There isn't a dressing room or manager that doesn't talk about the opposition in a derogatory way when you're about to play them.

With Manchester City winning 6-1, it completed it a gloomy Sunday for United, yet an organised, hard working, hard pressing Brighton side must be credited for a second successive home win against Mourinho's men - who didn't look like they had the stomach for a fightback.
