Strong natural disaster jolts Indonesian island of Lombok

A strong magnitude 6.3 natural disaster has struck Indonesia's Lombok island.

The quake was centred west-southwest of Belanting town in East Lombok, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said, at a relatively shallow depth of 7.9km. Sign-up now and enjoy one (1) week free access!

There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The latest tremor sent shudders through residents.

"We are still monitoring", he told TVOne television.

More than 350,000 people fled their homes after that quake to shelter in government-provided tents or makeshift structures in open fields.

Thousands of tourists have left Lombok since the Aug 5 quake, fearing further earthquakes, some on extra flights provided by airlines and others on ferries to the neighbouring island of Bali.

The economic toll of the quake - including its impact to buildings, infrastructure and productivity - has been estimated to be at least five trillion rupiah (€303 million).

Authorities said aid was slow getting to some of the hardest-hit areas as they are remote.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it lies on the Ring of Fire - the line of frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions that circles virtually the entire Pacific rim.
