Aretha Franklin is reportedly alert, laughing, and talking

The Detroit church once led by Aretha Franklin's father - and where she first tested her remarkable voice - filled with music once again Wednesday as dozens gathered for a prayer vigil for the ailing "Queen of Soul".

Aretha's publicist Gwendolyn Quinn told Associated Press that the 76-year-old has been visited by family and friends including Stevie Wonder, her ex-husband, actor Glynn Turman and United States activist Reverend Jesse Jackson. Also, Reverend Jesse Jackson and her ex-husband, Glynn Turman, will be visiting later today.

According to sources, the 76-year-old soul singer is under the watchful care of hospice workers as she fights off illness in Detroit, Michigan.

Her popularity has spanned generations and some fans shared personal stories of having met the icon.

"When I think of Aretha, I think of my mother and I think of a strong woman who has done so much, who has accomplished so much [and] achieved so much, so it's super saddening to know that she's very sick. We hope you'll lift her up by listening and sharing her songs that have meant the most to you", Clinton tweeted.

And on Monday night, Beyonce and JAY-Z dedicated their Detroit performance to her.

"My prayers are with Aretha Franklin & her family during this hard time LOOK BELOW @ what I tweeted at the top of the year we MUST CELEBRATE the Living Legends while they are here to see it". I spoke with her family members this morning. Some of her many hits include 'Respect, ' 'Natural Woman, ' and 'I Say a Little Prayer'. "I am not going to even deal with that", she told JET, PEOPLE reports.

News from Franklin's camp concerning her health has been limited, but rumours began in March, when the singer cancelled two of her concerts in New Jersey.
