Pogba tight-lipped over United situation

In an apparent attempt to thaw tensions, Mourinho named the World Cup-winning midfielder as captain for Friday evening's 2-1 win over Leicester City, four days after his return to training. We planned to go to Old Trafford early yesterday to try to get Pogba's autograph before the players went off to their hotel, but had a delay with the auto hire at Manchester Airport and missed the team.

"It's not having just the armband", Pogba said of his view on leadership. I came in the academy, I grew up.

Manchester United, though, ended the campaign without any silverware to heap pressure on Mourinho and his players. Mourinho followed suit by replacing the new number 10, Marcus Rashford, for the Belgian striker, Romelu Lukaku.Late into the game, it looked like it was all over for the foxes after Lukaku's was provided with a clear-cut chance on goal, with only Schmeichel standing in his way of the net. "Marcus Rashford was in trouble but he played", said Mourinho. To prevent scenarios in which its left to a manager to select a playing staff, only for them to then leave their role a few months later, a middleman between the dugout and the hierarchy is perceived to be a more suitable figure in the long term.

But the hosts got a much-needed lift after just two minutes when Daniel Amartey was harshly adjudged by referee Andre Mariner to have handled Alexis Sanchez's shot.

'We have big and multi-functional coaching staff, and I think we are more the head coach than the manager.

Then, on the stroke of half-time, Marcos Alonso was hauled down inside the box and Jorginho made no mistake from twelve yards out. But it's either Morata or Olivier Giroud after Chelsea failed to sign a striker in the summer transfer window.

"Like I said, when I have this, I have the confidence of the fans". I want to play [Anthony] Martial, but I can't.

Mourinho was particularly annoyed to miss out on a series of centre-back targets, including Leicester's Harry Maguire who shone for England in Russian Federation. "I doubt he'll be going anywhere this season".

So far there's no word as to who would fill this role, or when they would be appointed.

However, he can still rely on one of the world's best goalkeepers as David de Gea put his poor World Cup showing behind him with a fine save to prevent Maddison levelling. Eric Bailly did superbly to get back to deny Iheanacho and substitute Vardy bundled Shaw off the ball to send in a cross that Gray would have flicked home had De Gea reacted well.

Following the Leicester win, Mourinho again praised Pogba, calling him "a monster" for completing 80 minuted despite a short preseason, but there still appears to be resentment on Pogba's end as to how he is being treated by his manager.
