The Washington Redskins running back will miss the entire 2018 season after suffering a torn ACL just minutes into the team's first preseason game against the New England Patriots on Thursday. Initially, the Redskins were optimistic that Guice had only sprained his MCL, and the former LSU star was in good spirits after the game, telling reporters, "all is well".

"Grabbing him in the second round was obviously a great treat for us, but character was never a concern", coach Jay Gruden said recently, pointing to injuries and the quality of running backs as reasons for Guice falling in the draft.

Washington will open up the season on the road in Arizona on September 9.

Prior to Guice's injury, Washington's running back situation was in a bit of a "three-for-all" in terms of who will see the majority of touches behind veteran Chris Thompson, a 5-foot-8, 195-pound back better utilized in the passing game.

On defense, Leonard Johnson had a tough night surrenduring two touchdown passes and multiple catches when he was in coverage. But after an exchange of possessions, Taylor took the Browns 66 yards on four plays for the first touchdown of the game.

Instead, Guice's National Football League career starts with a medical redshirt. Thompson got 64 carries in his 10 games a year ago, and could be looking at a similar number of rushes per game with Guice out for the season.

Guice injured the knee on an impressive 34-yard run that was ultimately called back because of a holding penalty.

In camp, Guice had been splitting first-team carries with Kelley and Samaje Perine.

The team says tight end Manasseh Garner, a long shot to make the roster, is out for the season with an ACL injury.
