A Tropical Storm Warning means tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area. MODIS found cloud top temperatures of the strongest thunderstorms were as cold as or colder than minus 80 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 62.2 Celsius) around the center. That's about 240 miles (390 km) south-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. This general motion is expected to continue through Thursday, with a gradual turn toward the northwest expected Friday and Saturday.

By Tuesday evening, Hector was packing maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour. Hector is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

Forecasters expect little significant change in Hector's strength in the coming days. The estimated minimum central pressure is 956 millibars.

The NHC said tropical-storm-force winds will extend up to 115mph and the "far northern fringes of the hurricane will brush the Big Island on Wednesday".

Surf along east facing shores is building and is expected to peak tonight and into early Wednesday at 12 to 15 feet for the Big Island and 6 to 10 feet for Maui County.

A powerful hurricane expected to pass to the south of the state is forecast to bring dangerously large waves to east-facing shores of some islands starting Tuesday.

Emergency Management officials are still warning Hawaii Island residents to be aware of possible high wind, flooding rain, and high surf. Hector's strongest winds are confined to about 40 miles from the eye and are not expected to affect the island.
