Mourinho had considered making a move for the 29-year-old but has reportedly been gently let down.

It was United boss Jose Mourinho who sold him to United, and the manager may be open to doing so again if it meant landing Alderweireld.

The reigning French league champions Paris St Germain and their German coach Thomas Tuchel are said to be interested in signing Boateng.

"If we don't make our team better, it'll be a hard season for us", Mourinho told MUTV after United's 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich on Sunday.

Jerome Boateng has been the subject of interest from Manchester United who are desperate to bring in a new defender before Thursday's transfer deadline.

Another name being linked is Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld.

"We will see", the 34-year-old said.

Mnangagwa’s inauguration may need to be postponed as MDC arrives at court
But the MDC Alliance say the security forces have launched a brutal crackdown on the opposition following the disputed poll. Mr Biti is the first senior opposition politician to be detained since Mr Mnangagwa took over from Mr Mugabe.

Linked with Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Jerome Boateng and what seemed like almost every central defender under the sun, they ended up failing to sign any of them.

The 2017-18 German champions are rumored to be demanding a 50 million euro transfer fee. Having won the World Cup with France in Russian Federation, the midfielder wants his wages to rise to £350,000-a-week from his existing £150,000-a-week.

"I would go for Alderweireld, all day long, because he is suited to the way United play".

The only arrivals at Old Trafford this summer have been Brazil midfielder Fred, teenage full-back Diogo Dalot and back-up goalkeeper Lee Grant.

Everton appear to be moving closer to a deal for Barcelona's Yerry Mina - another summer transfer target of United's - and time is running out for Mourinho to find another defender ahead of his team's first Premier League game of the season against Leicester on Friday night.

Last season his Manchester United side then finished second in the Premier League, with their best points total since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, as well as losing in the FA Cup final to his former club Chelsea.
