Pogba has been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona in recent weeks, amid suggestions that he was disappointed by Mourinho's faint praise of his achievement as he played a pivotal role in helping France win the World Cup in Russian Federation this summer.

Martial flew home from United's tour of the United States to be with his wife Melanie Da Cruz as she gave birth in Paris.

Mourinho's transfer targets were not shared by the United board.

Mourinho was asked before kick-off if his choice to select the 25-year-old France worldwide was an attempt to keep the player at Old Trafford amid sustained speculation that he could head to Barcelona later this month.

The Daily Mail reports that Mourinho was left "furious, angry and frustrated" after yesterday's failed transfers.

Despite no new defenders, Mourinho insisted he was happy with his squad, but accused critics of lying about any turmoil.

However, a move did not materialise and Mourinho must now work with the same central defensive setup as he did last season.

We have to wait until the end of November to understand if we can fight for the title".

"I don't think I was playing as well as I could with my attacking capabilities last season, and that's what I'm known for". "I like challenges, I want to progress and win more trophies". "It depends on the music, but words for me don't come easy".

That didn't happen though and Jose Mourinho instead put his faith in his human insurance package known as Marouane Fellaini, trusted not so much as a fresh pair of legs, but more a fresh set of elbows and knees.

United's top brass want to follow City by "developing young talents instead of going for big-money older stars" that Mourinho prefers.

Yes, they went ahead inside the first three minutes through Paul Pogba's penalty, but what was important was the way they went after Leicester right from the off.
