All of the Everton and Fulham dealings materialised close to the deadline, while the early stages of the day were dominated by Chelsea, who confirmed Mateo Kovacic's arrival after signing Kepa Arrizabalaga late on Wednesday.

And ahead of his side's Premier League season opener against Leicester on Friday night, Mourinho addressed reporters' questions about whether United would be getting any late business done on deadline day.

'My view is that first of all it's hard for me to believe we finished second, ' said Mourinho of last season.

"So I will have to focus on the players I have and in relation to this first couple of matches, maybe four matches because after Burnley there is national team and a couple of weeks to recover people and prepare people better, is to focus on players available so I'm not thinking about that list I give you, I focus on what we have".

'I said during pre-season - it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane - but I repeat: pre-season is hard when you don't have your players to work, it's as simple as that'.

"I focus on just what we have, and we go with everything we have to the first match".

"I asked Pep directly, Premier League or Champions League?"

Where to watch meteor shower in UAE next week
Although the shower peaks on August 12, you'll be able to see a good deal of shooting stars all weekend and into Monday. The comet is the largest object known to repeatedly careen by earth, with a nucleus of 16 miles wide.

Mourinho had warned it would be a "difficult season" if United did not make any more acquisitions and it now looks like his side will miss out. Any deal for Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld was a way off on the eve of the deadline and interest in Barcelona defender Yerry Mina has been tempered up until now by prohibitive financial demands.

The lack of new signings will compound issues surrounding his squad for the start of the Premier League season. "[Sergio] Romero, [Antonio] Valencia, Marcos Rojo, [Diogo] Dalot, Ander Herrera, [Nemanja] Matic [are injured] and I think that's it".

"They returned on Monday".

"Because it is very important their feeling and to understand how they think they can help or not help". I was told that during pre-season it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane.

"My view is that, first of all, is hard for me to believe we finished second", he said.

'You are capable of making people who win nothing and finish below us look like serial winners.

"Is hard for me to understand, to feel, to believe we finish second".
