The California Republican, speaking at a closed-door event for Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Calif., last Monday, said "if [Attorney General Jeff] Sessions won't unrecuse and [special counsel Robert] Mueller won't clear the president, we're the only ones".

Nunes was the headliner at the $250-a-plate McMorris Rodgers' campaign fundraiser.

Nunes told the crowd at the fundraiser that he personally had called for Rosenstein's impeachment, but that it had to be delayed in order to keep the Senate on track with the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

"I mean, we have to keep all these seats", Nunes added.

"It's a matter of timing", Nunes said.

The California 22nd Congressional District congressman was apparently pitching himself and the Republican Party at large as a buffer for Trump, who, among several members of his election campaign, is a subject in the special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Later, he talks about the midterms and the honest need to keep a Republican majority in both the House and Senate, something Democrats are hoping to clinch.

It seems Nunes is anxious about whether Republicans would be able to make up the majority in the upcoming November elections and the fact that the GOP is the only thing stopping the removal of Donald Trump as president.

"These are sensible ideas, I'm glad Chairman Nunes talked about them", Jack Langer, a spokesman for Nunes, said in a statement to The Hill. But it's a fair question right now. But ultimately let's say the Portuguese came and brought her some stolen emails.

"So if we actually vote to impeach, OK, what that does is that triggers the Senate then has to take it up", he said, explaining that it could take away from other priorities of Congress. Okay, now we have a problem, right?

In the portion of his remarks played on MSNBC, Nunes neither compares nor contrasts this scenario with the release in 2016 of private Democratic communications.

Finally, Nunes, touted by the president as a "Great American Hero", revealed at the fundraiser that even he sometimes winces at the Trump's online communications.

It is clear that he intends to undermine the investigation because he lists keeping control of the House as an alternative to Attorney General Jeff Sessions - who is recused from the investigation and all related matters on the advice of ethics experts - taking control of the probe or to Mueller finding the president to be innocent. Either way, he said, such a power move would have to wait until after Kavanaugh is confirmed by the Senate.
