Mr Stokes, of Castle Eden, Durham, was arrested in the early hours along with Mr Ali, of Bristol, and Mr Hale, of Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol.

Cunningham said two men - Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale, who are standing trial accused of affray with Stokes - left Mbargo and walked off with O'Connor and Barry.

Hale, who it is alleged was punched by Stokes in footage captured on a mobile phone and played to the jury on Tuesday, cycled to hospital later on Monday and was found to have sustained a 1.5 inch superficial laceration to his forehead.

Mr Ali and Mr Hale also deny affray and are on trial alongside the cricketer.

Corsellis said the footage showed Barry touching Ali inappropriately on the groin, before returning and trying to take his arm.

Detective Constable Daniel Adams, the officer in the case, told jurors: "Ryan Ali and Kai Barry appear to be having a disagreement".

Jurors have previously heard claims that Mr Hales, who was never arrested in relation to the incident, stamped and kicked Ali as he lay on the floor.

He said Ali "seemed to be trying to back away or get away from the situation" before he was punched by Stokes.

Seahawks leave field prior to national anthem
In July, the NFL chose to suspend its new anthem policy which required all players on the field to stand for the national anthem. In addition to Jenkins, Miami Dolphins wide receivers Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson took a knee during the anthem.

The cricketer is accused of knocking both Hale and Ali out during the fracas.

Nicholas Corsellis, prosecuting, told the jury: "Mr Cunningham observed Mr Stokes's behaviour towards them".

"I decided at this point matters had become too serious to ignore and that I had to intervene to stop Ryan Ali", Stokes told police.

"I made a decision to intervene and asked Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale to stop abusing Kai and William". And Stokes replied: "Because he was abusing my two friends for being gay".

He added: "It was homophobic in nature". I took exception and said "leave it out".

"I didn't know who these males were because I was unable to identify them", PC Alway said. I struck Ryan Ali with my right hand just after he had delivered the blow on Kai and as he came at me with the bottle and had it raised.

"I was anxious it might be two on to one and I knew one had had a bottle just before this", he said.

He told police he "did not feel in any way drunk or impaired" and that he had consumed two or three pints at dinner before a further five drinks of vodka with a mixer in the Mbargo nightclub.
