Voters around the state of Kansas showed up at the polls Tuesday to decide competitive primary races and set the stage for the November general election.

The final House special election before the midterms became the latest to shift significantly in Democrats' favor in the Trump era, after victories by Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA) and Sen. Polls close at 7 p.m.

O'Connor and Balderson exchanged leads as the votes rolled in, with the Republican ahead by about 700 votes with 95 percent of precincts counted in the fight for a U.S. House of Representative seat.

Republicans are scrambling to avoid an embarrassing defeat in a seat that the party has held for decades.

President Trump campaigned for Balderson, a 56-year-old state senator, this past weekend in an effort to energize the GOP base, but some Republicans anxious that the president's appearance could have had an adverse effect by motivating voters who don't like Trump to come out for O'Connor.

Binder on Kansas: With 1 percent reporting in the Kansas GOP gubernatorial primary, the establishment-backed Colyer has doubled his lead over Trump-endorsed Kris Kobach.

"I've worked in OH presidential and senate races for Republicans and the idea of #oh12 being a close race is sort of like hearing gravity is a regional phenomena", tweeted Republican strategist Stuart Stevens.

But Trevor Moffitt, a public health doctoral student at The Ohio State University who voted for O'Connor, said he felt Balderson's attacks on Democrats went too far.

He said Iran had "always welcomed negotiations" but that Washington would first have to demonstrate it can be trusted. More U.S. sanctions targeting Iran's oil sector and central bank are to be reimposed in early November.

On the left, candidates backed by Democrat-socialist darlings Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders face off in key primaries in MI and Kansas.

Balderson got a majority of the vote, besting upstart Democrat Danny O'Connor perhaps thanks to a surge following a recent rally on his behalf by President Trump. Trump campaigned for Balderson over the weekend in Ohio.

The pro-Balderson effort has focused largely on motivating Republican voters by casting O'Connor as extreme.

Trump endorsed Kobach, Kansas' secretary of state, on Monday. Senate Republicans had hoped to make MI, a state which Trump carried, competitive, but it's fallen down the list of top targets for 2018.

O'Connor and his Democratic allies have railed against the tax plan, casting it as a giveaway for the rich that exacerbates federal deficits and threatens Medicare and Social Security.

"He is a fantastic guy who loves his State and our Country - he will be a GREAT Governor and has my full & total Endorsement!"

The five-way Democratic primary featured labour lawyer Brent Welder, who campaigned recently with self-described democratic socialists Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders 2016 alums to his campaign. Debbie Stabenow will take on military veteran and business executive John James, who won the Republican nomination.
