Karunanidhi’s death: Two foreigners join DMK cadre to shout slogans

Chennai's Kauvery Hospital issues the medical bulletin of DMK Chief M Karunanidhi; states a decline in his medical condition.

"On behalf of the United States Mission in India, I wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of former Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi and the people of Tamil Nadu". He tweeted: "Deeply saddened by passing away of Kalaignar Karunanidhi".

Years later, the two were to part ways, with MGR, as Ramachandran was popularly called, forming the AIADMK, the party which was to become a perennial thorn in Karunanidhi's side.

Karunanidhi, despite his apparent interest in politics, wore many caps throughout his life. He was also elected to the state Assembly 13 times. August 10, 2017: Steered by his son M K Stalin, Karunanidhi visits "Murasoli" office in Chennai on occasion of its "Pavazha Vizha", a rare visit outside his Gopalapuram house where he stayed put since his second bout of illness in October 2016. Karunanidhi has never, in his entire life, lost a single assembly election! He even founded the Tamil Nadu Tamil Manavar Mandram, the student wing of Dravidian Movement at that time. Jayalalithas holds the record of becoming the CM of Tamil Nadu six times.

He also made enormous contributions to Tamil literature and cinema.

In 2007, his remarks over Lord Rama in conection with Ramsetu bridge stormed a huge political controversy when he allegedly said, "Some say there was a person over 1.7 million years ago".

Karunanidhi, who was demanding a separate state flag for Tamil Nadu since 1970, ensured that chief ministers of states' who weren't allowed to hoist the national flag during Independence Day celebrations until 1974, were given the right to do so.
