ABC 7 reports Chicago Police Superintendent, Eddie Johnson, said during a press conference how most of the shooters have been arrested in the past on gun charges.

"By no means do these statistics mean we have a victory", the Police Department's Patrol Chief Fred Waller told reporters Sunday. Police say they know some of the shootings have been random and some targeted and related to gang conflicts.

Three people were shot Friday evening, 14 were shot Saturday, 47 were shot Sunday and six were shot early Monday, capping off the weekend, which began 5 p.m. Friday and ended 5 a.m. Monday.

A teenage girl was killed and five other people, including an 11-year-old boy, were wounded early Sunday in Lawndale neighborhood shooting on the Southwest Side.

Of the wounded who reported an age, the oldest was 62 and the youngest 11, police records show.

Gun violence has surged in Chicago in the last few years: 2016 was the deadliest in the city in 20 years, with 762 people killed.

Although the drop was significant, the total still exceeded the combined the number of killings in New York City and Los Angeles, which are the two United States cities bigger than Chicago.

'They take advantage of that opportunity and they shoot into a crowd, no matter who they hit, ' Waller said. "We are a better city".

Chicago has struggled with high shooting and murder rates in recent years. A person in a ski-mask fired shots at two people standing in front of a home.

The next shooting was just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning in the 1300 block of South Millard Avenue. Fox News itself has reported that 63 people were shot - not murdered - while, in fact, ten were killed.

Chicago has recorded more than 300 murders so far in 2018, more than any other USA city but about 100 fewer than the city had seen at this time past year.

"There are too many guns on the street, too many people with criminal records on the street, and there is a shortage of values about what is acceptable", he said. Police are planning coordinated enforcement that will target gangs and individuals they believe are driving violence, while police also seek to thwart retaliatory attacks. "I promise you it is not.No, we are behind the eight ball a little bit sometimes in trying to get people incarcerated, repeat offenders, we are behind the eight ball with that", he added.
