MoviePass to limit users to three movies per month, won’t raise prices

After announcing a price hike just a week ago MoviePass today announced that they will keep their price at $9.95 a month. Last week, the company said it would raise the price of its plan from $10 to $15 per month, but that's no longer the case.

Monday's announcement does not specify limitations on titles, though it does confirm the new plan "will include many major studio first-run film" when changes take effect with renewals on or after August 15.

MoviePass is cutting it short.

Starting soon, subscribers won't be able to head to the theater once a day to get the full value from their $9.95 per-month plan (a pricing structure that MoviePass continues to massage as it looks to turn a profit).

MoviePass says the new cap will affect only about 15 percent of subscribers - those who now watch four or more movies a month. "Struggling financially" is a bit of euphemism, actually. Additionally, the service is also doing away with surge pricing for big movies on opening weekends.

The company's financial flailing has hurt stock prices and hit home for users: some showtimes have been unavailable, often without explanation. The only thing that I had disrupted was my own service with MoviePass.

MoviePass has grown to 3 million subscribers, from about 20,000, since it slashed monthly rates almost a year ago to $10, from as high as $50. The company slashed its prices nearly a year ago - allowing subscribers to see a movie in theaters every day for less than the typical cost of a single ticket in many cities - and its popularity skyrocketed. But the question has been asked again and again: Is it the deal just too good to be true?

MoviePass has shown that many moviegoers will make time to hit theaters when movies are affordable, despite more convenient options such as Netflix and video on demand.
